Topology optimisation algorithms and computational design methods for metal AM
Albert C. To is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Pittsburgh and a leading researcher in computational design methods tailored to additive manufacturing constraints. His group developed AM-specific topology optimisation algorithms that incorporate build-direction constraints, overhang limits, and support-structure minimisation directly into the optimisation loop — reducing post-optimisation redesign effort. He has published influential work on self-supporting lattice structures, multi-scale optimisation for graded cellular materials, and the use of machine learning surrogates to accelerate concurrent topology and process optimisation. To has also contributed to computational models of solidification microstructure in metal AM, linking process parameters to grain texture predictions. He began publishing in AM around 2012 and has been supported by DARPA, NSF, and DOE grants in this area.
