Statistical quality control and in-situ monitoring for laser powder bed fusion
Bianca Maria Colosimo is Professor of Manufacturing and Production Systems at Politecnico di Milano and a leading international authority on in-process monitoring and statistical quality control for metal AM. Her research group pioneered the application of melt-pool imaging combined with statistical process control (SPC) charts to detect porosity and lack-of-fusion defects in LPBF in real time. She has published extensively on optical emission spectroscopy for layer-wise quality monitoring and on the use of functional data analysis to characterise spatially resolved thermal signatures during printing. Colosimo has been active in the AM field since approximately 2008 and has coordinated several European research projects on qualification of AM parts for aerospace. Her work has directly informed industrial in-situ monitoring architectures deployed by European machine builders.
