Directed energy deposition, laser cladding, and in-process monitoring
Ehsan Toyserkani is Professor of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo and founder of the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing (MSAM) Lab — one of the largest academic AM facilities in Canada. He co-authored the textbook "Laser Cladding" (CRC Press, 2004) with Khajepour and Corbin, which remains a primary reference for DED process science. His group has produced influential work on closed-loop control of DED using thermal and optical monitoring, on multi-material DED for functionally graded structures, and on AM-specific in-process defect detection using acoustic emission and high-speed imaging. Toyserkani holds the Canada Research Chair in Additive Manufacturing and has supervised industry-funded programmes for aerospace, oil and gas, and biomedical applications.
