Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) — process science and industrialisation
Filomeno Martina is Professor of Additive Manufacturing at Cranfield University and a co-author of the foundational 2016 Materials Science and Technology paper "Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing" that defined the WAAM process window, deposition rate vs. resolution trade-off, and the role of inter-pass rolling for residual stress mitigation. He worked closely with Stewart Williams in establishing Cranfield's Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre as the global hub for WAAM research, and he co-founded WAAM3D Ltd in 2018 to commercialise the technology — supplying robotic WAAM cells, software (WAAMPlanner), and feedstock qualification to aerospace, defence, and oil-and-gas customers. His published work covers titanium, steel, and nickel-superalloy WAAM, large-scale structural demonstrators, and the integration of inter-pass rolling with deposition.
