Design for AM, AM education, and reverse engineering
Ian Gibson is one of the founding educators of the additive manufacturing discipline. With David Rosen and Brent Stucker, he co-authored "Additive Manufacturing Technologies: 3D Printing, Rapid Prototyping, and Direct Digital Manufacturing" — first published in 2009 and now in multiple editions, it remains the most widely adopted AM textbook in engineering curricula globally. Gibson held senior roles at the National University of Singapore, the University of Auckland, and Deakin University before joining the University of Twente, where he is Chair of Industrial Engineering and Additive Manufacturing. He is editor-in-chief of the Rapid Prototyping Journal and has shaped the design-for-AM discourse through both his teaching texts and his work on bone-scaffold AM and reverse engineering workflows.
