LPBF single-track physics, process windows, and defect prediction
Igor Yadroitsev is Research Professor at the Central University of Technology, Free State and one of the foundational figures of laser powder bed fusion. His 2009 book "Selective Laser Melting: Direct Manufacturing of 3D-Objects by Selective Laser Melting of Metal Powders" was the first comprehensive treatment of the single-track approach to LPBF parameter development — a methodology now embedded in machine-OEM qualification workflows and standards. Working with Anton du Plessis and others, he has produced a long series of widely-cited papers on the relationship between melt-pool morphology, hydrodynamics, and porosity in LPBF, particularly in Ti-6Al-4V and stainless steels. He chairs the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's AM activities and has built CUT into a world-recognised LPBF process-development hub. His more recent collaborations with synchrotron facilities have produced widely-used XCT defect datasets feeding qualification frameworks.
