Electron beam powder bed fusion and AM qualification for aerospace and space propulsion
Jorge Mireles is Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and a member of the W.M. Keck Center for 3D Innovation. He specialises in electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) of nickel superalloys and titanium for aerospace and space propulsion applications, with a particular focus on process parameter development and qualification strategies for AM components intended for flight hardware. His research has examined the effect of EBM beam current, scan speed, and focus offset on porosity, microstructure, and tensile properties of IN718 and Ti-6Al-4V, contributing data sets that underpin qualification databases at the Keck Center. Mireles has collaborated with NASA, SpaceX, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory on rapid qualification of AM thrust chamber liners and structural brackets for small satellite propulsion. He began publishing in AM research around 2012 and has co-authored papers on the use of computed tomography for EBM defect characterisation.
