Laser-based additive and subtractive manufacturing, surface engineering
Lin Li is Professor of Laser Engineering at the University of Manchester and founder/long-time director of its Laser Processing Research Centre, one of the UK's largest academic laser manufacturing groups. His research spans the full spectrum of industrial laser processes — laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, laser cladding, laser cleaning, micromachining, and laser surface engineering — with strong emphasis on hybrid manufacturing combining additive and subtractive operations on a single platform. He has published over 800 papers and patents and supervised more than 100 PhD students, many now in academic and industrial leadership positions in Europe and Asia. Li is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Laser Institute of America, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He has chaired major international conferences including ICALEO and contributed extensively to UK industrial strategy in laser-based manufacturing.
