Electron microscopy and 3D microstructure characterisation of AM Ni-superalloys
Michael Uchic is a Senior Materials Research Engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, where he leads work on advanced characterisation of structural alloys. He developed the focused-ion-beam micro-pillar compression test, which has since become a standard tool for measuring local mechanical response at the grain scale — directly applicable to AM microstructures with strong spatial heterogeneity. His group has applied serial-sectioning 3D EBSD and synchrotron techniques to characterise as-built and post-HIP microstructure of LPBF and EBM IN718, IN625, and CMSX-4 components for AFRL aero-engine and hypersonics programmes. Uchic's work underpins much of the U.S. Air Force's qualification base for AM nickel superalloys in propulsion applications.
