DED-arc and DED-laser fatigue, multi-material AM
Scott M. Thompson is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University and a core faculty member of the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME). His group focuses on directed energy deposition (DED-laser and arc-based) processes, with particular emphasis on functionally graded and multi-material AM, in-process thermal monitoring, and fatigue behaviour of as-deposited parts. He has co-authored review articles on DED process science, contributed to ASME and ASTM round-robin campaigns, and developed thermal-imaging-based process control methods. His work bridges fundamental microstructure–process understanding with industrial qualification for aerospace, defence, and energy applications. Prior to Auburn, Thompson held a position at Mississippi State University where he co-founded an AM laboratory.
